Just when you were starting to think you understood the benefits of chiropractic care, along come another study to throw a monkey wrench into your ideas. Because, the thing is, these studies are proving that chiropractic care has much more to offer than simple relief of neck or back problems. Yes, as it turns out, the science and research is finally coming to ‘catch up’ with what doctors of chiropractic have been saying and practicing for over 100 years!

photo

Chiropractic is about your nervous system. Period.

Simple but true.

It always has been, too. It’s just that it is easier to explain that the bones of your spine move and can become misaligned with respect to one another. This doesn’t change the fact that along with these spinal contour changes comes alterations in function of other tissues, organs and even brain function!

For the purposes of this article, we’ll be focusing on the relationship between chiropractic and cardiac function and blood pressure changes. Various chiropractic techniques have been demonstrated to show improved cardiovascular function as a result of appropriate chiropractic care.

What does this really mean? What we’re really saying is that by working with your spine, we affect the function of your nervous system. The nervous system is comprised of both up-regulating and down-regulating elements. Specifically, there are two branches of the autonomic nervous system, known as the sympathetic (up-regulating) and parasympathetic (down-regulating).

These work in harmony to keep your body in a state of dynamic balance. You can think of it like a gas pedal and a brake pedal. You need both for your body to function at its optimum. When your body is able to adapt effectively, because of a flexible and adaptable nervous system, your body feels and functions better.

As it pertains to cardiovascular health, the vagus nerve helps to regulate the sinus rhythm of your heart and this relates with the overall tone of your blood pressure. Of course, the kidneys, hormones and other pathology factors may lead to changes in cardiovascular function as well. Keep in mind, however, that the other organs and tissue systems also have nerve system input and regulation. It has also been shown that postural changes are associated with hormone function, breathing, heart rate and headaches.

In another article about heart rate variability, we’re discussing the benefits of chiropractic as well. Briefly, the idea is that when your heart rate has a more variable frequency, that this is a reflection of a more dynamic and adaptable nervous system.

It’s a similar end result in terms of what happens, increase health and well being, it just depends on what you’re looking at or measuring. In the case of cardiovascular health, blood pressure is often one of the measured variables. So, studies that show that chiropractic can lower blood pressure are the more published findings.

If you know anyone who is concerned about their blood pressure, cardiovascular health or is currently taking medication for same, but is looking for effective alternative approaches, have them contact our office. We’d be happy to introduce them to the care that we provide and see if appropriate chiropractic care can lower their blood pressure.

One of the most common questions people have when they begin care (whether or not they actually voice that concern to me) is ‘how does Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) work?’ In other words, how can such a gentle touch do anything to help your back pain, neck pain, headaches, fibromyalgia or other health concerns that you may be experiencing.

I want to help you understand how something so gentle – that involves none of the traditional manipulation associated with chiropractic – can create large changes in relatively short periods of time. That is, given the fact that you’ve likely been experiencing your pain or discomfort, tension and frustration for weeks to months, maybe even years, this gentle care can be amazingly effective – and rather quickly, in most cases!

Let’s define quickly for a moment, just to allay any misconception. Many people experience changes in their symptoms within the first few weeks to month of care. This is with several visits per week in the beginning of care. In some cases, yes, people experience relief in just a few visits. But, just the relief of pain does not indicate that we’ve fully addressed and dealt with your underlying factors that have lead to your pain in the first place.

This is what we’re really both after, isn’t it? After all, you don’t want to settle for just chasing your symptoms around, finding temporary relief, only to have it return again and again. This is why we see so many people leaving the traditional medical model behind. It’s an old way to address health and well-being.

The irony or ‘proof’, if you will, is that even Western medical practitioners are seeking alternative methods of health care for themselves and their OWN family. If we were seeing your doctor for care in our office, talked with them about their organic dietary choices, noticed that they were practicing yoga and the like, don’t you think it would be harder to accept their recommendation that YOU should take drugs, do physical therapy and get a surgical consult? Just something to think about.

Okay, here’s how it works in a nutshell…

The gentle touch that we use is all that is necessary to help cue your nervous system to create a connection with your brain. This ‘connection’ has to to do with the fact that when our bodies cannot adequately handle the stresses from life – physical, mental/emotional or biochemical – it creates a tightening. It tightens the tension being exerted on the nerve tissues of the spinal cord.

Because of how this tissue connects with your spine and other tissues surrounding it, your body will begin to tighten, creating more tension. This whole process is known as adverse mechanical (spinal) cord tension (AMCT) and was described in the 1970s by Dr. Alf Brieg. These models were then applied to the clinical application of Network Care to help explain how it is that such a light force can produce such a profound change in someone’s body.

This gentle touch or entrainment, as it is called, is applied to areas on the skin overlying areas of the spine where this tissue attaches to the spinal cord and spinal bones. The force cues the brain to create a change in physiology to unwind the tension – this occurs through a change in breath and subtle movement of the spine and related tissues.

As you progress in care, you will notice other changes occurring in your body, your health and your life. This is what all the research supporting Network Care shows and is reflected in my private practice since 1998.

So, that spinal degeneration that you’ve seen on your Xrays or the MRI findings showing those bulging discs of yours reflect the fact that this tension and the underlying reasons for your current pain have been going on for some time. Not to worry! You see, it’s never too late to get a handle on your health and well being.

You may have wondered how the spine actually changes shape or contour over time due to spinal tension and the demands placed upon it by life. A colleague of mine and chiropractor in Boulder, CO recently shared this video. It shows how the degenerative changes take place in the spine over time. Understand, these changes took place over years. Day to day, week to week and month to month, this individual did not likely appreciate any changes. However, over time, they did notice MANY changes to their quality of life and health.

Pay special attention to the spaces between the vertebrae – the disc spaces (dark) – as they become shorter in height. Notice how the spinal bones lose their smooth uniform shape around the edges to form more spurring and roughened sharp edges. Also, you’ll notice how the natural curve in the neck disappears and creates a more flattened and straightened appearance.

This video is demonstrating the changes that take place in the cervical spine (neck). These same types of changes occur in the mid-back and lower back as well. One thing to note is the fact that since the neck region is an area where the tissues of the spinal cord have ‘anchor points’ of connection with the bones of the spine, this is a critical area. These types of degenerative changes are very common with injuries that don’t heal, prolonged neck stiffness that isn’t addressed, chronic neck pain and upper back tension that are not cared for and more.

These changes can FEEL like less range of motion, a stiff or painful neck, headaches, tingling or numbness in the arms, hands or fingers – mimicking carpal tunnel syndrome. It could also present as upper back pain, a ‘hump’ in the upper back and a head carried forward on the shoulders posture.

What you’re seeing is simply the result of the types of physical, mental, emotional and biochemical stresses that we talk about in the office manifesting themselves as these long-term, degenerative changes to the spine. Understand, it isn’t postural problems that CAUSE these changes, it is a combination of the stressors just discussed.

Your posture is simply a REFLECTION of – or RESULT of – long-term stress and tension in the body. So, how do you help prevent this? Chiropractic care, of course, is our preferred approach! Specifically, a gentle and effective approach called Network Spinal Analysis.

What this care does is assist your body in unwinding the tension that builds within the tissues and muscles surrounding your spine that would lead to such degenerative changes. This gentle touch is something we touch upon in the article you can link to there. For the purposes of this article, understand that this video demonstrates how the spine changes shape due to these subtle, yet ‘real’ stressors of life.

Yep, you guessed it, that’s me, Dr. Mike. I’ve never been good at making New Year’s resolutions or promises to keep. It isn’t that I make them and fail, I just haven’t kept track of things this way. This year, I’ve gotten off to a good start by reading a post that was written by Laura Fenamore from One Pinky on one of my new favorite blogs, Tiny Buddha.

I like the idea, promoted there, of calling them solutions. If you think about it, look at the words themselves; solution, resolution. One is primary and the other almost has a re-dundant factor. In other words, the solution solves the problem or issue and the re-solution would be like a second try, because the first didn’t work out quite well enough. Sometimes, refining is a good thing, but let’s aim higher together.

photo

You get the idea. So, this year, I’m making some solutions to give myself a better ability to share what I love in life. I’m going about this by creating a large, spearheaded goal called “Sharing is Caring and Caring is Sharing”. Then, I’ve got several ways about carrying this ultimate solution through.

The motivation you ask? I’ve been playing too small in life. In other words, I haven’t been giving life my all. It’s a hard truth to face, putting it in writing (and sharing it) is really helping me to step up the game, so to speak. I’m motivated by people in life that are living their passions and I’m excited by the possibility of helping you do the same.

I’m fortunate enough to be able to do what I love and share that gift with others. You can do the same! However, there are reasons why you may be feeling limited in your ability to do so. Maybe you don’t even know what your passions are anymore. Watch the video of Dr. Demartini in this post to learn some great tips and ideas.

It’s strange, but some people have just been doing the status quo for so long, they’ve sort of given up on their dreams or think of it as child fantasy. I find that sad. I want to help people express more of their passion and human spirit through their body and in their life. This is what the world needs now more than ever.

It may help if you can come up with some problem that you’d like to solve. It could be related to work, a relationship, your finances, weight-related, health or fitness related or it could be more spiritual in nature.

My ‘problem’ is that I’d like to share what I do with more people. Since I’m only one guy and I’m inside my office for a greater part of the week, how can I do this? I’ve come up with some ways I can think of, maybe you can share more with me. I’d love that!

Network Spinal Analysis care has really helped me to live a more vibrant, expressive and connected life. I know that I’m healthier and happier when I am receiving it than when I’m not. If you’ve been on the receiving end of Network Care, then you probably feel the same way that I do.

This is actually one way that you can help; share your Network Care experience with your friends and family. It’s okay if they don’t live near my office, I’d love to refer them to someone in their part of the country or world if that is the case. Like I said, I want to share what I do with more people, they don’t have to just be people in my local community (though, that’s fun, too )

My other main solution is by utilizing the Twitter and Facebook universe. I have been more of a casual user, posting interesting things from time to time, but I want this to be more of a regular activity. I want to share my experiences, insights and findings with you more than ever.

I come across and participate in areas that you may not and I learn a lot from these pursuits. I hope to share more of these with you with the goal of enhancing your life as well. My solution is to post daily – to these platforms – something of value. Something enriching to you. Something that you’d be excited to share with those you love and care about, too.

Other solutions include more regular lectures outside the office and more community gatherings inside the office. Hopefully, you’ll be able to attend some or all of them! I’m looking forward to connecting with you more in the coming year!

Let’s start with the short answer – Yes, chiropractic can help you conceive. Now, let’s move on to the longer version of the answer. Many people think or have been led to believe that chiropractic care is just for the relief of back pain or injuries sustained from an accident. We’re the ‘bad back doctors’, right? This isn’t entirely accurate.

While chiropractic care can help you experience less pain in the areas associated with your neck or back, the major benefits have to do with the fact that chiropractic care improves your nervous system function. It also has the ability to support your immune system in performing its best and giving you a greater ability to ward off common illnesses. You can read more about these other great benefits of chiropractic on our site. For now, let’s focus more on the issue of conception and why you may be having difficulty.

How Many Couples Struggle With Infertility?

It can be frustrating or painful seeing your friends seemingly easily getting pregnant around you. The numbers show that infertility affects nearly 10% of couples actively trying to become pregnant. In 30% of the cases, the underlying trouble lies with the woman. Likewise, men are implicated in 30% of cases. So, what does all of this mean and where does it leave you?

For most women, the first step will be to your OB-GYN for a consultation and evaluation to determine if they know what is going on. Sometimes, there can be congenital abnormalities or obvious issues that are making it difficult to become pregnant. You’ll likely be subjected to a variety of tests. The problem is that they will likely offer you only suggestions involving hormone therapies or other medical procedures. If you don’t wish to pursue that route for fears of side-effects or other personal reasons, you are left with little from the traditional allopathic healthcare system.

However, there are alternatives to explore as well.

These involve techniques and approaches that address you in a more natural and holistically-minded way. This is based on sound principles and practices – for thousands of years in some cases. Think acupuncture as one example. There are other natural dietary and herbal-based approaches that your naturopath or holistic medical doctor may pursue.

There are also other approaches that look into your whole life. You may be experiencing very emotionally challenging times, for a variety of reasons un-related to the current stress of having a hard time conceiving – which is only adding to your heartache. It could very well be that you have stress in your life because of work, relationship or other family matters. If you’re living with this level of underlying chronic stress, your body responds appropriately. It’s feeling that this isn’t a good time, biologically-speaking, for you to carry a child. Your body perceives this to be an unsafe time. It is more important to be in protection and survival mode, not reproduction.

Here is where chiropractic comes in. As mentioned above, chiropractic care helps your body to better adapt to and deal with stress as it manifests in your physiology. Your body structure will change based on the stress and tension in your life. There are many approaches within the chiropractic field that range from traditional to more progressive in scope and practice.

In our office, we focus on an approach called Network Spinal Analysis. This system utilizes gentle and specific contacts at specific places along your spine helping you unlock and unwind tension. This unresolved tension or stress can be literally keeping your body locked in a perspective or state of stress. When the tension eases, your body can become more alive and vibrant again. In this state, you are more receptive and open to the possibilities in your life.

If you’re seeking alternatives to the medical path to becoming pregnant, this is your invitation to consider Network Chiropractic care. You’ll experience greater ease in your body and a greater general sense of well being.

First of all, congratulations on being an awesome parent who considers such things! The structure and function of your child’s spine is one of the most important things you can take care of early in life. It will set the foundation – literally – for the way they develop from an early age.

The reason that the spine is so important has to do with the functions that it has. Functions? Yes, the spine actually has important roles. One of these roles is to protect the delicate and highly sensitive nerve tissues of your child’s spinal cord. This is really the information superhighway of the body. The spinal cord relays message from the world around you to your brain and back the other way, from brain to body.

If there is some sort of disturbance or dysfunction in this system, your child’s health and well being will suffer. Just some more obvious and common signs that your child’s spine needs to be evaluated include things like ear infections, asthma, spinal contour changes – postural curves and scoliosis, behavioral changes, sleeping problems, bed wetting and more. This list is just a sample of the way the body may present with varying symptoms of nerve system disturbance.

How Can You Tell If This Is From the Spine?

This is another great question! Wow, you’re really paying attention. What chiropractors are looking for are areas of the spine that indicate that your child’s body has adapted in some way to a stressful condition from the environment. These stressors could be physical (sports injuries, falling, learning to walk, car accident), mental/emotional in nature (anxiety, peer pressure, difficult home environment, abuse) or biochemical in nature (poor diet, air pollution, poor indoor air quality).

When your body cannot adapt effectively, the spine distorts in such a way to protect your body from any more energy or information coming in that may lead to a ‘nervous breakdown’ to use an old term. In younger children, you might know this better as a temper tantrum. I know THAT got your attention!

This is how kids respond in that situation. We would too, except we have learned how to suppress those emotional outbursts into more socially acceptable ways of behaving. However, what happens to that stressful energy or anger and disgust that you don’t express? It still affects your body. It happens with your kids, too.

So, what you can look for is changes in behavior, the way they carry themselves, their concentration, ability to sleep and feel rested, feedback from teachers and other signs that you pick up on simply by knowing your child. If you child is particularly active in sports, then you may notice a change in performance or the way they move during their sport.

Who Do You See First?

If you’re concerned with your child’s health, you may opt to take them to the doctor. Which doctor? Depending on your personal beliefs and understanding regarding health, healing, medicine and cultural background, you may be more likely to visit a traditional Chinese medical doctor, acupuncturist, naturopath, D.O., M.D. or chiropractor. There are other options, too. One of the more common is “Dr. Mom” where you just do watchful waiting and nurturing. This is by far one of the most important.

If you do choose to take your child to the doctor, you will get advice that is going to come in the form of one of the following choices: a) do nothing and see what happens b) get a prescription c) get a referral for a specialist. The specialist could be a physical therapist or other specialty in medicine, like a cardiologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist (G.I. doc) or ear nose and throat doctor. These referrals would all be based upon the specific symptoms your child presented with; G.I. complaints, ear infection or some other musculoskeletal symptoms.

Chiropractors are the only health professionals trained and educated in the detection and correction of spinal distortions, alignment issues and other dysfunctions under the broad category called spinal subluxations. How do you know the best chiropractor to see and when? Since chiropractors have a unique specialty and can be seen without a referral, you may choose to visit one first. Most parents are looking for advice with some sort of complaint, like with back pain, scoliosis or other neck and back or headache related symptoms.

It is not until parents learn about chiropractic and how it is unique that they seek out care as a way of helping them and their family living a more healthy life. This is a great opportunity to start your child out in life with the benefits of a natural approach to living. Changing behaviors later in life is much more difficult. Begin now and watch your child develop and blossom in ways that you would wish for your child.

There are many approaches to chiropractic, some more traditional in their style and some more progressive or gentle. We offer Network Spinal Analysis at our office. Since 1998, we’ve been helping families live more fruitful, healthy and enjoyable lives. Contact us today and find out how and when we can be of service to you.

Make no bones about it (lame chiropractic pun intended), your child’s nervous system is a vast potential of connections to the world around him or her. You can just see this is the way they take in the world from an early age. They require the parents for safety, true, but more and more evidence is showing how much love actually plays an even greater role. Babies that are loved and given attention and affection by their parents develop more resistant and resilient lives. Their bodies are healthier, more adaptable and they have stronger immune systems. Love is the key ingredient!

This is just as true in your life, of course. What we do as adults is try to make excuses for why we don’t have this in all areas of our lives. You need to have a love and passion for your work as well. Loving relationships are equally as important. Who you hang around with and stay in an intimate relationship with all affect how much happiness and joy you will experience in life. These are all indisputable truths.

So, how does this have anything to do with your child and their nervous system? Everything! There have been other studies that show how developing fetuses begin wiring for the environment in which they will find themselves after birth. This is all the way nature intended. If your mother experienced very stressful or traumatic times while you were growing inside of her womb, your world outside of mom appears as she experienced with you.

In other words, the world is perceived through your mother first, then through your own ability to experience it, by way of your nervous system. If you are being raised in a loving home with a safe and nurturing environment, you will have a greater ability to wire your nervous system for these types of experiences in the world (the one outside your home as you grow up).

If, on the other hand, you experience that same stressful place that your mother was experiencing while you were developing, then you, too, will begin wiring this into the ‘perception filter’ of your brain and spinal cord – the main conduits of your nervous system.

There is a whole new wave of research in the field of ‘epigenetics’. This field is about studying the ways in which your genes express themselves. You see, just because you have the gene for “_______” (fill in the blank: obesity, diabetes, cancer, poor cardiac health, pick your disease du jour) DOES NOT mean that you will ‘get’ the disease itself.

“How can this be” you may be wondering, “I have the gene”. It happens because lifestyle is a greater factor than even the gene itself. Some estimates put lifestyle as the 80% and the gene itself as the 20% relative to the percentage of influence on the condition showing up.

This is why we emphasize caring for your nervous system through gentle and effective Network Chiropractic. Chiropractic is not about the bones, joints, discs or muscles only – those are like the genes. What we seek to correct or adjust is the way your nervous system is functioning. Always has been, always will be our goal at Infinite Healing Arts Center.

Your child deserves the chance to express their perfection that was born within them. They have the ability to express that beauty and creation through them if no interference to the process exists. Your child experiences the world through you. If you are living out of line with your true purpose, passions and love, don’t you think they will feel this? Of course they do. We find that families receiving care together create the strongest and consistent healthy changes over the long term.

If you have ever wondered about chiropractic and children, contact us today and we’ll be happy to provide you with the answers you are looking for. Chiropractic is not a treatment of specific conditions per se, but even if you’re just wondering if it’s true that chiropractic can help with ear infections, bed wetting, scoliosis, emotional well being or just allowing the optimum expression of health and life to shine through your child’s bright beautiful eyes, call us today.

Whether you are experiencing muscle spasms or more local trigger points doesn’t really matter, both of them are a pain. The reason why it is important to know about these muscular conditions is that they may be mistaken for other issues and other symptoms may mimic these.

If you don't want this type of thing, read this and the other articles regarding neck pain on our site.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, I’d suggest you visit with your favorite and trusted local health care practitioner to determine the exact nature of your complaints. You don’t want to rely on information you read on our site or others as a means of ‘self-diagnosing’ health conditions, though it can be useful information to bring up with your doctor.

So, what is the difference between muscle spasms and trigger points, anyway? Well, not much, really. Spasms and muscle cramping can be the result of a host of reasons. One of the most common ways of experiencing cramping is due to dehydration. Luckily, this is also one of the simplest and easiest remedies. It will not help you once you’ve got the cramps, prevention is key here. However, if you are cramping, stretching and hydrating are still important to recover properly. This type of cramping is more common in the peripheral muscles or those in the limbs, most notably in the legs.

If you’re experiencing back spasms or muscular tension in the muscles around the spine, there is a more common reason for this than fluid or electrolyte imbalance. You see, the muscles around the spine – especially the smaller core spinal stabilizing muscles – have nerve fibers coming to them from a branch of your autonomic nervous system. This branch is responsible for the whole ‘fight or flight’ or ‘adrenaline response’ you may be familiar with or have heard of. This innervation allows your muscles to tighten or ‘spasm’ in preparation for fighting or running away.

We’ve developed this mechanism as a way of dealing with life-threatening situations. However, now, humans use this same mechanism to deal with all sorts of stress – only some of which may actually be life threatening. This response is healthy and desirable, so long as the threat is real. However, when the threat is gone, we should not still have muscular tightness or tension.

The problem is that we do, all the time, in fact. A great majority of my practice is filled with people that have muscular aches, spinal tension, headaches, back pain, fibromyalgia and a host of other stress-related symptoms and conditions. Network Spinal Analysis happens to be a great option for assisting people to overcome these challenges and adapt more effectively moving forward in their lives. Combined with somato-respiratory integration exercises this work gives people an amazing ability to recover.

Trigger points are just more local or focal points of muscular spasm. There is still debate on exactly what is going on with them. How or why exactly our bodies ‘create’ them is still somewhat of a mystery. Treatment often consists of stretching, direct pressure or gentle heat in a more conservative approach. Western medicine would have you inject them with something or another, no surprises there.

These focal points can be extremely tender and also lead to limitations in ranges of motion and create pain that is similar to that of a disc herniation with radiating pain. The difference between herniated disc symptoms or pain and trigger point referred pain is that the trigger point often has a more diffuse pattern. The nerve pattern is much more specific. Your description should help your doctor determine which to address.

Sometimes, treating one will affect the other anyway. This is so often the case. Your body may be creating trigger points and muscle spasms in an attempt to stabilize and area of your spine that is injured or perceived to be unstable for whatever reason. Whatever situation you are in, having your spine and nervous system functioning at their optimal level is important. Contact us today to be properly evaluated and get back on the road to a pain free and flexible body again real soon.

Like with all sports, it is very important to stay well hydrated. This is in large part a great part of superior performance. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of the physiology and biochemistry of this principle, a little background won’t hurt.

Since our bodies are made of water, in large part, having it replenished is key to our proper functioning. When you are active, your body simply runs out of water – dehydrates – that much faster. It is happening all the time, through your breath, through your skin and by the other waste products our bodies make.

The pros stay hydrated on the golf course, so should you.

The more that your body is in shape in terms of muscle mass to body fat, the more energy it will burn at rest. This is called your basal metabolic rate. As your metabolism speeds up, your body burns more calories, your heart beats faster, you breathe more rapidly and sweat more. These are all ways that you will lose fluids from your body.

Now, the question is: what types of fluids do I need to replenish with? You’d think that from marketing and advertising during sporting events or at your local gym that you need Gatorade or other ‘nutritional water’ products.

The truth is, you don’t need anything but water to hydrate your body. If you are doing extremely strenuous exercise or you’re working out for prolonged periods, then you will require some electrolytes as well. You can certainly get these from foods, like fruits, too. You don’t need expensive sports drinks. In fact, you should probably stay away from the great majority of them as their main ingredients are water (good), high fructose corn syrup or other simple sugar (bad).

Flavored water is not a bad thing, but you don’t need to buy it thinking you’ll get more out of it than you will. What I recommend is adding some lemon, lime or squeeze of orange to your own water. You can also add a hint of mint if you like. These make the water not so boring.

Keep in mind that drinking room temperature or cool water is better than replenishing with ice cold water. There are all sorts of theories about how the cold water actually affects the way your body will take in the water, but it also comes down to sensation. It can give you a ‘stomach ache’ to drink too much ice cold water during a vigorous workout. Better to drink more cool water and let your body absorb it more effectively.

While golf is not exactly considered the most vigorous sports out there, it does require that you stay hydrated. With all of the walking and long exposure to the sun, you can quickly dehydrate without paying much attention. This is especially true if you are riding in a cart most of the time or drinking alcohol on the course.

Hydration is not just because it’s ‘good for your body’, it is also a necessary part of sports performance. Without adequate water, your body physiology will not function the same. You may be subject to cramps or muscle spasms and other performance-related problems. Your nervous system also relies on water to you’re your nerves and connective tissues able to send their messages fully and completely.

Fatigue is also a common problem or symptom of dehydration. Fatigue can lead to a poor swing mechanics and other injuries. You don’t want your fatigue to lead to back pain or other golf injuries. Besides these injuries, you may notice that your drives are not as long and maybe your putting is more difficult. Don’t let dehydration keep you from enjoying your beloved sport.

Back pain and other injuries are common in the golf profession as well.

In this article, we’ll discuss some of the more common back pain golf injuries and what you can do about them. Like with all health care information you find online, it would be prudent to contact your local health practitioner that you trust to help you figure out the nature of your pain. Many back pain symptoms present in similar ways, so it’s always best to have a good diagnosis before coming up with your own treatment plan.

Back Pain

This is one of the highest injury categories in golfers. It also happens to be common among the general population. It is estimated that 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point in their life. If you play golf, it always seems to happen right before or during your round, doesn’t it?

The common areas are the lower back near the pelvis and upper back pain, between the shoulder blades or in the shoulder joints themselves. While neck pain and other joints, like the knees, wrists and elbows can become involved, we’re going to be focusing on the spine.

Injuries to the lower back often are the result of poor form or posture during the swing. They can also be due to swinging too hard and other aspects relating to mechanics. It can be a chicken or the egg type of dilemma. It is well known, now, that posture is more of a reflection of what level of tension our body holds unconsciously than any conscious attempt we are making. The good thing is, you can set up properly in your stance and make sure that you are balanced prior to your swing to help with this. However, making sure that your body is free of spinal tension is the key to a more fluid and full golf swing.

Pain in the upper back regions are often due to muscular spasms, trigger points or spinal joint shearing. The repetitive nature of the swing makes it critical that the muscles are at ease and the joints of the spine can be moving smoothly. Hydration is a key component to much of this as well. In many areas, like where we are located in the desert, golf is very popular. It also is one of the most dry and arid climates, so care should be taken to stay well hydrated.

A common form of back pain can be the result of the joints of the spine being irritated or locked in their ranges of motion. This is called facet syndrome and it can be extremely painful to move in most any range. It is more common in the lower back, but the upper back and neck can be areas as well.
