Migraine Treatment: Conventional and Alternative Options

There are a variety of migraine treatment choices available to you.  As the title suggests, these options are available no matter what your health care philosophy or goals are.  Among the conventional, Western medical approaches are pharmaceutical options.  There have been many drug companies that have rushed into the migrane market as they’ve seen a great potential for large profits.  Migraine medications represent a significant aspect to the margins of some of these companies.  At the time of this writing, Botox is being used in attempt to treat migraines as well.  In a typical procedure, it is injected in the forehead area, the back of the skull near where the neck meets the head and down the neck to the shoulders.  It is pending FDA approval for treatment of migraine headaches, which will then allow for more insurance reimbursement (and likely more prolific use of this technique).

With the development of newer drugs comes more research and development.  Even with all of this, there are still many gaps in our understanding of the various migraine causes.  We can define what the nature and picture of how migraine symptoms look, but their ultimate cause is still elusive.

Likewise, there is more known about how these types of headaches can be triggered.  Some of the more common migraine triggers are actually lifestyle-related, so these things can be affected by the choices we make.  There are also more holistic or alternative ways of approaching the treatment for your headaches that we’ll be discussing in more detail.

Chronic Migraine Treatment

Many people that suffer with migraine headaches have been doing so for many years.  It is common for migraines to appear in the teen years or even in childhood.  In children, it is more common to suffer abdominal migraines.  These may or may not produce the headache pain associated with the ‘adult’ version.  Just like with an ocular migraine, symptoms such as blurred vision and other symptoms related to classic migraines exist, but without the headache.

Treatment for migraines in the alternative sphere of modalities can include things like:  massage, acupuncture, biofeedback, chiropractic, yoga, herbal headache remedies and other mind and body approaches.  In fact, a study by Tuchin, et.al. published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), it was found that chiropractic care dramatically helped migraine sufferers.  Further, one in five participants reported significant improvement in migraine severity following 2 months of care.

It is important to note that some of these techniques will work well for migraine sufferers and not those experiencing other types of headache pain.  For example, cluster headaches are an excruciating form of pain that will often not respond to any form of biofeedback or massage work.  On the other hand, tension headaches are very effectively treated using a variety of mind and body approaches that address the stress-related issues that accompany this form of headache pain.

If you are unsure of what type of headache you are afflicted with, it is a wise idea to consult with your local health care practitioner.  This doesn’t matter if you suffer with headaches everyday or if they are more infrequent.  The nature and underlying factors leading to your headaches needs to be addressed in order for you to enjoy a higher quality of life.

At Infinite Healing Arts, this is what we focus on.  Our unique approach is called Network Spinal Analysis care and it helps your body to reorganize the way it has stored tension and underlying spinal distortion patterns.  What this care allows is for your body to unwind the tension that has been stored in various areas of your back and neck and gives you new ways of experiencing the health and well being that you are seeking.

How does it do this?  This is accomplished by making very gentle contacts at specific places along your spine, areas that allow your central nervous system to ‘reset’.  In simple terms, it is like pressing the reset button on your body so that it can reboot up with a more effective way of adapting to stress and life.  This has helped people who live with chronic migraine headaches for years and have tried ‘everything else’.  In fact, this is a common story that we hear all the time.

When you’re tired and frustrated by all of the other options you’ve been offered to no avail, it’s time to try something new.  Maybe that something new is Network Chiropractic.  If you’re interested for yourself or someone you know, contact us today.
